PM Modi with The Economic Times

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji gave an exclusive interview to The Economic Times where he discussed his vision for the next five years. I would like to share my insights from the interview:

  • Modiji has promised more opportunities for entrepreneurs. According to him, entrepreneurs are India’s ‘Growth Ambassadors’. I am very impressed that Modiji said that all efforts will be made to make India a better place to do business. It is also heartening to note that Modiji wants entrepreneurs to get better productivity and better profits. This will boost the economy, increase investments in India, create more jobs and contribute towards the well being of the country.
  • I am also glad that Modiji touched upon the GST reforms brought in during his previous term. As he rightly pointed out, bringing in GST reforms in a country like India is no mean feat. In fact, the previous term of the government was responsible for bringing in several positive changes in the country which deserve appreciation and credit. As Modiji pointed out, five years ago, who would have thought that India can implement GST, it can be a nation where no one defecates in the open, it is a nation where all households receive electricity and access to clean cooking fuel is available to more than 8 crore families The remarkable accomplishments of the government are truly worth to be proud of – I am proud that I was part of the generation which witnessed these watershed changes.
  • Modiji shared his vision for the next five years in great details. He wants an investment-led growth of the Indian economy. Naturally, the steps taken by the government will be to encourage more investment in the country. The target is to achieve INR 100 lakh crore worth of investment. The government will accordingly tweak policies which can help in better influx of investments. Modiji noted that reforms in the FDI policy, labour laws, power sector etc. will be needed and the government is working towards it. I unequivocally support this vision and congratulate the government on having identified the exact areas which need reform. I am certain that the target set will be achieved before the completion of five years as the wheels have been set in motion.
  • When he was asked that what is the solution proposed for sectors like automobiles, real estate and mining which are experiencing slowdown, he explained once the economic growth increases and India becomes one of the investment hubs, these sectors will automatically receive a boost. He also added that availability of lower cost credit and a stability in policy environment were key to sustaining long-term demand in these industries.  I think this is exactly what is needed to revive these industries. But it must be noted that despite the slow down, the mineral sectors (except oil, gas and coal) grew 9% in volume terms and double digits in value terms during 2018-19 and  the government is to be thanked for that. On the automobile sector, Modiji noted that the slowdown is fleeting. The credit constraints and regulatory restrictions are responsible for the passive growth. He’s confident that the automobile industry will bounce back soon. He assured the nation as well as the international markets that Indian is a great market for internal combustion engine (ICE) based automobiles as well as electric vehicles (EVs). With the right changes in the economic policy of the country, there is no reason why the growth in the automobile industry will not take place.
  • On the issue of data privacy, Modi ji noted voiced his unequivocal opinion that privacy protection is of paramount importance. He said that  data privacy and protection is an developing concept globally.  The government believes that personal data protection for every single citizen is a must. Accordingly, the government has started working on a framework to protect the same. It was comforting to hear that the government treats right to personal data with the same importance that right to private property was during the industrial era. Under his able leadership, I am confident that a strong set of regulations will be put in place to ensure that no abuse of private data takes place.
  • The interview also touched upon environmental issues such as water conservation. He was asked if the larger economic goal of the government was to reduce the dependency on monsoons. Modiji said that conservation of water should be in the nature of common man. He said that the Jal Shakti Abhiyan driven by the collaborative efforts of people of the nation, central government and state government will ensure that the economic goals of water conservation are reached.

This interview of Modiji makes me confident to say that the future of the nation is headed in the right direction and the policy measures are for the benefit of the people.
